Well it looks like it is going to be a flashback to rock and roll yet again. I have what I would consider one of the greatest inventions of modern time - a satellite radio! I love it because I can listen to whatever I want without any commercials. I have over 100 channels of music, news, talk radio, etc. I sound like a commercial. Anyway, as I was driving to work this morning I had it on a channel called Hair Nation and a song called Hole Hearted by Extreme was playing. As I listened to the lyrics a thought came to mind. Take a look at some of the verses from this metal ballad:
Life's ambition occupies my time
Priorities confuse the mind
Happiness one step behind
This inner peace I've yet to find
Rivers flow into the sea
Yet even the sea is not so full of me
If I'm not blind why can't I see
That a circle can't fit
Where a square should be
There's a hole in my heart
That can only be filled by you
And this hole in my heart
Can't be filled with the things I do
The song was written by the two lead singers Nuno Bettencourt and Gary Cherone. I am not sure what these guys believe or where they are coming from spiritually but this song has some spiritual undertones whether they realize it or not.
One of the first verses that came to my mind as I was listening to the song was a verse from Ecclesiastes:
Ecclesiastes 3: 11 ...He has also set eternity in the hearts of men;...
This is the hole that Nuno and Gary were writing about that cannot be filled with the things they do, man has been trying to fill his heart with everything this world has to offer, fame, fortune, material possessions, power and on and on but it still leaves him feeling empty.
Listen to what Christ said about being truly satisfied:
John 6:27-35 - “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will you perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will you do? Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
Christ is the only one who can fill the void in our lives. Man has tried since the beginning of time to fill it with everything else but has always come up feeling empty and dissatisfied. How much longer are you going to try to fit a circle where a square should be?
